This collection contain student theses or essays, handwritten or typewritten manuscripts, entered in School competitions for prizes or awards. Competitions include: J.V.C. Karnes Prize; Edward Thompson Publishing Co. Prize; and American Law Book Co. Prize. "Departmental" competition was held annually, limited to junior and senior students or seniors only. Topics were chosen by the School of Law Dean and the essays were judged by a panel of lawyers selected by him. Some manuscripts have handwritten information relating to identities of these judges.
